How can I compile (AMC) LaTex source without installing AMC?

Added by Will Ursus over 10 years ago

Can I simply copy over some style file (automultiplechoice.sty, and/or some other files?) to my MacTex installation directory?

The situation is: I upgraded my Macbook to Mountain Lion recently, and just couldn't get AMC successfully installed (either via macports' default auto-multiple-choice port, or via a local port description). My workaround is to install AMC in Ubuntu via VirtualBox (for which installation is convenient and easy to be maintained up-to-date), and use AMC there to process LaTex source and further scanned exam papers. However, I do want to do the intense LaTex exam-document-preparing task under the native MacTex system, and bring up Virtualbox-AMC only when necessary.

I'm currently a 6-month LaTex-er, not quite familiar with installing non-standard LaTex package, and can't find instructions specific for AMC. A hint from a veteran user would be greatly appreciated!

You can pick the style file used in your Ubuntu box (located at /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/AMC/automultiplechoice.sty), and place it in the same folder as the LaTeX source file you are working on.
To avoid bad news when switching to Ubuntu, transfer again the style file when you upgrade AMC on Ubuntu.

That is convenient.

See if I understand this part correctly: if AMC in the Ubuntu box is upgraded, refresh all style files copied over with the upgraded version. Is that you're saying?

Yes. This way you can be confident that the exams you will prepare on MacOS will run smoothly on Ubuntu too.
